Smashwords.com publishes four titles

by Caitlin Hicks

"For writers, it's The Wild West"

March 28, 2011 - Smashwords.com, the industry leading e-publisher has published four titles by Caitlin Hicks in eight different formats, including EPub, Kindle, Palm Doc and LRF (for Sony readers). Hicks is known to coast audiences as a playwright and performer. Her most recent show, Stories for a Winter Solstice was hosted by the Arts Centre in December.

The first title, George Goes for a Walk is a collection of three short stories. In the title story a man's life changes abruptly during a routine errand as he steps into the crosswalk and makes the decision to help a woman who has been hit by a car. All three stories have had previous publication history: George Goes for a Walk was published in Knight Literary Journal in 2004; the two other stories were shortlisted in two separate short story competitions.

Next of Kin is a non-fiction story about a haunting family secret. First published in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in 2003, the story is described by Hicks: “When I was 21 years old, preparing to travel to Europe for the first time, my Mother whispered a request: to get her a photo of the grave of her childhood sweetheart in a cemetery in France. I came home empty-handed. This is the true story of how, years after she died, I finally got the photo, and came to understand its importance.”

Two plays, Singing the Bones and Just a Little Fever, were also picked up. Hard copies of both plays are also available at the Writers Guild of Canada. Singing the Bones – adapted to a feature film, this year celebrates its tenth year of screenings around the world. The film premiered on the Sunshine Coast at Raven's Cry Theatre with fanfare & sold out screenings in 2011.

All four titles will be featured in Smashwords Premium Catalogue, which means that Sony, Barnes & Noble and other major retailers will have the titles available for sale on their sites. Since there is little cost to publish, the titles are quite reasonably priced, between 1.99 and 2.99 each. To view the titles, go to Smashwords.com and search "Caitlin Hicks" or the individual titles of the e-books. Or, go directly to the following url addresses:

Each story can be sampled prior to purchase - as 20% of the work is available to read before a purchase decision is made.

A new frontier of e publishing has opened up for writers and publishers with the flowering of social media. "Smashwords is a great publisher," Hicks comments. "As every writer knows, the difference between success and failure in the world of publishing, is promotion. Founder of Smashwords, Mark Coker's Marketing Guide, available for free on Smashwords, has tons of innovative ideas on how to promote, as well as standard things that every writer should do. I'm a bit of a luddite, and it's definitely a learning curve for me, but I want to learn. For a writer, it's the Wild West -- if your work hits a nerve, you can experience success beyond your wildest dreams. There are writers who are published exclusively on Smashwords.com who have figured it out and are quite successful."
